Online learning during lockdown – A supplementary school approach

Keeping students engaged with learning has been a challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. At RDN, we’ve adapted the Supplementary School to be delivered virtually. This has enabled us to provide much needed support to primary and secondary students online. In this article, we look at how supplementary schools can be vital in helping children catch up with missed learning hours.

An Evening at the Royal Albert Hall

On Sunday 17th November, a group of the Riana Development Network Supplementary School were invited to attend the very first OnSide Youth Zones Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.

NRCSE Quality Mark Assessment Day

Teachers from RDN Supplementary School attended the NRCSE Quality Mark Assessment Day on the 20th December 2018.

Staff from Riana Development Network were interviewed by independent assessors on the teaching, assessment and evaluation practices used in the school. NRCSE Certification Evening

On Thursday 5th July 2018, our volunteers from the RDN Supplementary School received certificates for completing the Level 3 Effective Teaching in Supplementary Schools training.

The topic of the evening was: The Added Value of Language and Culture – a seminar on the role that supplementary schools play in their communities and in education. Effective Teaching in Supplementary Schools

Volunteers from the RDN Supplementary School have had the opportunity to attend training sessions this year, delivered by the NRCSE on effective teaching methods.

The course, which ran from 21st February – 28th March 2018, will result in participants receiving a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. Supplementary schools from Hammersmith and Ealing also attended, enabling the sharing of ideas and strategies for teaching. Community Police Engagement: Health and Safety Talk

PC Antony O’Brien from Hounslow Metropolitan police delivered crime prevention talks in October 2017 to young people about personal safety leading up to the Christmas period.

He also talked about knife crime and gang culture and how young people or the general public could access various supports available. The young people were able to watch a video with true life story of how knife crime can change the lives of the members of the family, the victims and society at large.

NRCSE Bronze Award for Supplementary Education

On Wednesday 25th October 2017, teachers, students and volunteers visited Hammersmith Town Hall to collect the award presented to the RDN Supplementary School.

The Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham, Michael Cartwright, was also present at the awards ceremony. The NRCSE Bronze Quality Framework Award is a mark of accreditation for supplementary schools.
